Holly’s corner: “How and upside-down lock is shaping my best self in 2023”
From January 4, 2023… Today I returned to work after being on and off for 3+ weeks with a multiple of happenings… weddings, funerals, stomach bug, 5 days off in a row with kiddos at home, first time watching some of the Christmas classics like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (not appropriate with your 10 year old) and Die Hard (somewhat not appropriate with your 10 year old but he then understood the Christmas Eve sermon where the preacher referenced Die Hard and the need to wear shoes!!!) my brother’s family visiting for the first time at Christmas, Seminoles pulling out a win and the Bulldogs also pulling out a last minute win on NYE and my mom calling on New Year’s Day that my father had fallen off his bike and had broken his leg only (no concussion or hip fracture).
And while all of the above was magical and amazing in its own way, I thrive on routine and was ready for the alarm clock to go off, hit the gym, wake up the kids and get them to school and for me to return to work. (Not that I ever stop working for my most amazing clients). And yet there was something strange about returning to work? It wasn’t the endless sweet treats still in the kitchen, or our beautifully cleaned out employee fridge but the lock on the women’s bathroom door. The lock was broken on Tuesday and fixed quickly… maybe a little too quickly as it was installed upside down, making you lock it the opposite way.
Hmmmm. Why is the lock so perplexing? I am use to it turning one way to lock it and now the same lock works turning the opposite way. This upside-down lock is making me consider other things that could unlock when tackled from a different angle…
Physical- If you hate running, try group fitness, a Peloton class or a walk after dinner. I like F45 group fitness and walking my dog before & after dinner. Sometimes a kid might join me on the walk and share his good or hard parts of the day with me… #bonus.
Financial- If you hate reducing your spending, try giving or saving first. I love setting 401k’s to auto increase and set up to a percent… so when you receive a raise, your savings into your 401k automatically increases.
Spiritual- If you hate reading your bible, try a meditation podcast. I like the “Abide” app.
Finding what works for you will unlock your best self in 2023 and the “key” to having your best year yet.
